Understanding Rockingham County Releases
A Rockingham County release ends one custody episode. It may not end every form of custody or legal control. The Rockingham/Harrisonburg Regional Jail can discharge a person to the community after bond, dismissal, a court order, or completion of local time. It can also transfer someone to Middle River Regional Jail, the Virginia Department of Corrections, another jail, or an agency acting on a warrant or detainer. Only a discharge to the community is a plain community release.
The distinction explains why released inmates vanish from a current-custody view. A jail roster, when one exists, answers who is held now. Rockingham County does not publish an official searchable roster or historical release feed on the Sheriff’s site. Durable proof instead comes from the releasing jail’s record, the court order behind the event, VADOC records when state authority applies, and a saved VINE notice as supporting evidence. Two matching sources give a firmer answer than one missing name.
- Discharge
- The end of the relevant custody term or supervision status.
- Time served
- A release because the active custodial time in the order has been satisfied.
- Parole
- Conditional release from a qualifying prison term, followed by supervision.
- Probation
- Court-ordered supervision that may follow custody or accompany suspended time.
- Detainer
- A request or legal basis for another authority to take or keep custody.
Rockingham County Release Types
The release label controls what the record proves. Bond or recognizance permits a person to leave while the case continues, subject to the court’s terms. A dismissal, acquittal, or nolle prosequi ends or removes a charge, but another case can still hold the person. Time served or sentence satisfied means the active custodial part of that order ended. Parole and probation can put someone in the community while legal supervision continues.
| Recorded outcome | Meaning | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or recognizance | Pretrial community release under conditions | Court case and jail release record |
| Time served or sentence satisfied | Active local term ended | Release sheet and sentencing order |
| Parole or probation | Community placement with supervision | VADOC locator and District 39 |
| Transfer or remand | The first jail’s custody ended, but confinement continued | MRRJ, VADOC, or named receiving custodian |
| Detainer or warrant pickup | Another authority assumed custody | Receiving agency and issuing court |
Release and transfer must never be treated as synonyms. A person who leaves Liberty Street for MRRJ or VADOC remains confined. Likewise, a VADOC community-supervision entry can show that prison custody ended without proving the sentence is fully discharged. The record should be read against the whole chain of custody.
Rockingham County Release Record Fields
A precise Rockingham County request should seek existing fields, not ask the Sheriff to write a new account. Link the release to the booking with the person’s name, approximate dates, date of birth when known, and booking or case number. Ask separately for an adult routine-intake photograph if it is needed. The agency may redact exempt matter, and a record may not contain every requested field.
| Field | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Name and booking number | The custody episode tied to the person |
| Admission date and time | When that booking began |
| Release date and time | When the releasing custodian ended its hold |
| Release disposition or type | Bond, sentence completion, court order, transfer, or another recorded outcome |
| Transfer destination | The receiving custodian, when recorded and releasable |
| Related court case | The legal matter behind the custody episode |
A court disposition can explain the authority for release but not the exact gate time. VINE may report a custody event, yet it is an alert service rather than permanent case proof. For a state prisoner, the signed Order of Release and conditions are stronger than a projected date. Once VADOC supervision ends, Form 17 is the specific inactive-offender records route.
Request Rockingham County Release Records
Rockingham County lists the Sheriff as a county record holder. Requests can go through Rockingham NextRequest or through the channels on the county FOIA page. A request does not have to cite FOIA or be written, but written scope makes the date range and requested fields clear. Virginia FOIA applies its statutory access right to Commonwealth citizens and qualifying Virginia media.
- Identify the person, booking facility, approximate booking date, and booking or case number.
- Ask for the existing booking and release sheet, release date and time, disposition, and transfer destination if recorded and releasable.
- Request an electronic copy, segregable nonexempt portions, and an advance estimate before costs pass a chosen limit.
- Use the court clerk for a final bond, dismissal, sentencing, or release order rather than asking the jail to interpret the case.
The initial response is ordinarily due within five working days under Virginia Code § 2.2-3704. The office may produce records, explain a full or partial withholding, report that no record was found, identify another known custodian, or invoke added time when production is not practical. Reasonable actual search and duplication charges may apply, and an estimate over $200 can require a deposit.
The manifest capture of the official Rockingham request channels shows the local route and response framework.

That county page is the right starting point for a Sheriff-held release record; MRRJ-created records must be requested from MRRJ.
Rockingham County Sealing After Release
Virginia’s sealing framework changed on July 1, 2026. It now includes automatic and petition-based paths alongside traditional expungement. Release alone does not seal a Rockingham County booking, charge, photograph, or court case. Eligibility depends on the disposition, offense, waiting rules, and statutory limits in Chapter 23.2 and the separate expungement chapter.
Once a covered record is sealed, ordinary public access by listed courts and justice agencies is restricted, subject to lawful exceptions. A result that disappears could reflect sealing, a portal change, retention, or a correction. It does not establish a new custody event by itself. Copies that left government custody before sealing are a separate issue, so an old outside copy does not define the present official record.
Find Rockingham County Released Inmates
A named-person search should begin with the facility that held the person. Rockingham and Harrisonburg cases may involve either RHRJ or MRRJ. The official Sheriff site publishes no 24-hour or 72-hour release list, so a live roster substitute cannot supply historical proof. A same-day check must use the verified facility, court, VINE, and records-request fallback instead.
- Confirm identity with the full name, date of birth, case number, booking number, and approximate custody dates.
- Call RHRJ and check MRRJ. Ask whether absence means community release or transfer.
- Read the combined Harrisonburg/Rockingham General District Court case or Rockingham Circuit Court case, based on case level.
- Search VADOC when a state sentence, state-responsible status, or community supervision is involved.
- Use Jail VINE for the named local custody event and register separately with NAAVI when eligible state-custody notification applies.
- Request the release record when public tools do not provide durable proof. Use BOP or ICE only when the case points there.
Still-in-custody and released-person tools answer different questions. A live jail search locates current confinement. A county release sheet records the end of a local episode. VADOC may show prison custody or active community supervision, but not a permanent profile after final discharge. The court supplies the legal order, while BOP and ICE cover distinct federal boundaries.
VADOC Search for Rockingham Releases
The VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator covers people in state custody or active state community supervision. It is not a Rockingham County historical release archive. Search by a seven-digit DOC ID when possible. A name search requires at least the first three letters of the first name and the full last name. Optional filters include location, race, gender, and age range.
| Search detail | How to read it |
|---|---|
| DOC ID | Best match key when the seven-digit number is known |
| Name | Use required characters first, then narrow carefully |
| Facility or local jail | The person remains in custody |
| District office | May confirm active community supervision after prison release |
| Projected Release Date | A forecast, not proof that release occurred |
| No result | Could mean spelling, lag, local-only custody, or final discharge |
VADOC says the locator updates daily and can be inaccurate or out of date. A District 39 location can support a finding that the person left prison into supervision. It does not mean all supervision ended. For an inactive offender, use the department’s FOIA route and Form 17. The court order and signed release papers remain key checks.
Rockingham County Release Facilities
Rockingham/Harrisonburg Regional Jail is the primary local facility at 25 South Liberty Street in Harrisonburg. A local discharge can lead to the community, but transfers can go to MRRJ, VADOC, another jail, or another custodian. Its public page has no searchable historical release list. Call 540-564-3800 and ask staff to distinguish release from transfer or route the inquiry to records.
Middle River Regional Jail is in Staunton but houses some people on Rockingham County or Harrisonburg cases. Its official current-inmate tool is a location check, not a discharge archive. The official MRRJ inmate-information page shows that separate custody channel.

A missing MRRJ result still needs confirmation from MRRJ, the committing court, and VADOC when state transfer is possible.
Getting Home After Rockingham Release
RHRJ is downtown near Court Square and Harrisonburg’s East Gay Street transit hub. The January 2025 HDPT system map shows routes 1 through 6 meeting at that hub, with weekday and Saturday service. It does not promise a stop at the jail door, a ride at release time, or service aligned with release processing.
Travel should therefore be checked against the current transit schedule before the expected day. RHRJ does not publish a gate-release time, family waiting point, release door, or weekend and holiday release schedule. Call the jail for current logistics. Nearby transit is a planning option, not evidence that a person has been released or a guarantee of transportation.
Rockingham County Bond Release Checks
Rockingham-Harrisonburg Court Services is the combined local pretrial and community-corrections agency. It is separate from VADOC parole. The RHRJ page lists SmartDeposit, telephone deposit, and Cobra Cashier channels with pay-location code 4500 for bail. It specifically warns that GovPayNet is not an RHRJ service. Confirm any payment route on the official jail page.
Payment does not by itself prove physical release. Jail staff must process the bond, and another warrant, detainer, commitment, or case can keep the person in custody. Read the bond entry in the correct court and confirm the jail event. The Court Services Unit may handle pretrial supervision, but it does not issue the jail’s release record.
Rockingham Release Reentry Support
The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Community Services Board jail-based program provides assessment, medication management, education, and transition planning. Its community liaison can meet a person who is approaching release and connect that person with therapeutic care and community resources. Access begins through a jail medical request or staff referral.
This local transition service is different from legal supervision. VADOC District 39 handles active state probation and parole for Rockingham County, Harrisonburg, and Page County. Rockingham-Harrisonburg Court Services handles local pretrial and community-corrections roles. The correct office depends on the court order and locator status, so a reentry referral does not establish parole, probation, or discharge.
Rockingham Release Mail Retrieval
RHRJ has a distinctive post-release mail process. Mail received after release or transfer is returned to the sender. A former inmate may request digital copies of scanned mail by emailing the official jail mail address with the full name, inmate ID, and reply email needed for verification. This is a former-inmate retrieval channel, not the public FOIA route.
Returned mail cannot show whether the person entered the community. The same rule applies after a transfer. Family or counsel should still check RHRJ, MRRJ, VADOC, and the court as the known facts require. The mail policy is useful after release, but it cannot replace a release sheet or receiving-custodian check.
Rockingham Release Court Checks
Virginia’s lower-court selection is named Harrisonburg/Rockingham General District Court. Use it for misdemeanor, traffic, bond, and preliminary felony activity. Rockingham Circuit Court holds felony indictments, final felony dispositions, and district-court appeals. Choosing a nonexistent standalone Rockingham GDC can send a search in the wrong direction.
The General District Court search screen is the official starting point for lower-court records.

Read the case number, charge, plea, disposition, sentence, suspended time, jail credit, bond, and appeal entries. A court event may authorize release, yet another hold or processing step can delay the physical exit. Order a nonsealed final order from the proper clerk when lasting proof is needed.
Rockingham Release and ICE Handoffs
The ICE Online Detainee Locator System is relevant only when a case or detainer points to immigration custody. Search with the nine-digit A-number and country of birth, or exact biographical details. ICE attorney resources say the locator can include some people released from ICE custody within the last 60 days. Exclusions, intake lag, and agency limits make a no-result inconclusive.
An ICE result is distinct from a Rockingham County jail release. No result cannot prove community release, removal, or freedom from another authority. For a genuine immigration-custody question that the locator does not resolve, ICE lists its Detention Reporting and Information Line at 888-351-4024 on weekdays, excluding holidays, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
Federal Release Checks for Rockingham
The BOP Inmate Locator is the correct route for a sentenced federal prisoner. It accepts a federal identifier or a name search and can display status and a release date. “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” confirms only that BOP no longer holds the person. Another justice system or federal supervision can still apply.
The official BOP search capture shows the name and number routes used for a federal boundary check.

For federal pretrial detention, the U.S. Marshals Service can move people among facilities but does not publish a general historical release locator. Use the federal court order for pretrial release or acquittal. A BOP date may also change after sentence calculations, so confirm the actual event through the responsible federal record.
