Middle River Release Outcomes
Middle River Regional Jail, or MRRJ, is a regional jail run by the Middle River Regional Jail Authority. It stands in Augusta County, yet Rockingham County and Harrisonburg participate through their authority membership and custody arrangements. The Rockingham Community Criminal Justice Board expressly identifies people remanded on cases from the 26th Judicial Circuit and District who are held at MRRJ. That makes this jail a required check for many local custody questions.
A local court may release a person from MRRJ to the community after bond, dismissal, a court order, or completion of a term. Other departures do not mean freedom from custody. The person may return to Rockingham/Harrisonburg Regional Jail, move to VADOC as state responsible, or enter another jail’s care. The MRRJ release or transfer record should identify the disposition and destination when those fields exist and are releasable.
| MRRJ event | Custody meaning | Confirmation source |
|---|---|---|
| Community release | The regional-jail episode ended without a recorded transfer. | MRRJ release record and committing court |
| Return to RHRJ | The person is no longer at MRRJ but remains in local jail custody. | RHRJ general line and record |
| VADOC intake | State corrections became the relevant custodian. | VADOC locator and state record |
| Other-jail transfer | Confinement continues with a different local or regional agency. | Receiving agency named in the MRRJ record |
Middle River Custody Search
The official MRRJ inmate-information page is the first online channel for present custody. Search the person with enough identifying detail to avoid a name match error. The result addresses a live custody question, not a permanent history of MRRJ releases. If a once-visible entry disappears, contact MRRJ before deciding why.
The official current-custody page is shown below. It helps identify the right MRRJ channel and its scope.

A current result establishes that MRRJ still reports the person in its custody system. No result proves only that the current search did not return that person. Spelling, timing, transfer, and release can each affect what appears. Match the result to the booking and court case before relying on it.
Jail VINE can supply a separate event notice for a named person in local or regional custody. Search the matching identity, note which jail supplied the record, and save the alert details. A release or transfer event still needs a destination check. Virginia’s state-prison notification system is a separate enrollment, so a local jail alert does not automatically follow a person after VADOC takes custody.
Note: MRRJ’s live inmate channel does not distinguish every reason a former result stopped appearing.
Confirm a Middle River Release
Gather the full name, date of birth if known, the MRRJ booking number, the court case number, and the likely custody dates. Use the jail and court systems in sequence. The goal is to connect MRRJ’s recorded end event to the legal order and any receiving custodian.
- Search MRRJ’s official inmate-information channel for present custody.
- Call MRRJ if the person is missing or the result is unclear, and ask whether an existing record shows release or transfer.
- Check Rockingham/Harrisonburg Regional Jail because a person can move back to the Liberty Street facility.
- Read the Harrisonburg/Rockingham General District Court or Rockingham Circuit Court case that committed the person.
- Search the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator when MRRJ or the sentence points to state responsibility.
- Request MRRJ’s booking and release record for durable confirmation.
Disappearance from MRRJ’s current-custody search does not identify the destination. Confirm release or transfer with the jail record.
A separate RHRJ release-record page covers the Liberty Street route. For a broader named-person inquiry, the Rockingham County release search lays out court, VADOC, VINE, federal, and records-request channels.
Middle River Release Records
Send an MRRJ-created record request to MRRJ, not automatically to the Rockingham County Sheriff. The custodian rule follows who made and keeps the record. Ask for the booking number, admission date, release date and time, release disposition, transfer destination, and routine-intake photograph if it can be released. The committing court remains the source for the bond, dismissal, sentencing, or other legal order.

Do not assume Rockingham County’s fee schedule applies to a record held by MRRJ. Request an estimate from the jail. Virginia FOIA permits reasonable actual costs and applies to existing nonexempt records. A narrow request is easier to process than a request asking staff to explain the full case.
The court record and jail record answer different questions. MRRJ documents its custody episode and recorded disposition. Harrisonburg/Rockingham General District Court handles local misdemeanor, traffic, bond, and preliminary felony matters, while Rockingham Circuit Court handles felony dispositions and appeals. A court order may authorize release before the jail completes processing or resolves another hold.
For the MRRJ request, describe existing fields instead of asking why the person left. A useful description gives the full name, date of birth if known, booking number, and date range, then asks for admission time, release time, release type, and transfer destination. Request electronic copies and a cost estimate. If MRRJ does not hold one item, ask whether it knows the correct custodian, but do not assume the Rockingham Sheriff can produce an MRRJ form.
An adult routine-intake photograph can be requested as a separate record under Virginia’s law-enforcement-record provisions. Release can be delayed in a felony matter when disclosure would jeopardize an investigation, and other exemptions may apply. The absence of an online MRRJ photo does not show that no agency record exists. It only means the live page should not be treated as a public historical photo archive.
Middle River’s Local Role
MRRJ opened in April 2006. A service agreement records Rockingham County and Harrisonburg becoming authority members effective July 1, 2015. The arrangement followed years in which local systems dealt with crowding and rented jail space. Today, the result is a custody map that crosses county lines even though the criminal case remains a Rockingham or Harrisonburg matter.
The Community Criminal Justice Board published a January 8, 2024 snapshot that counted 214 Rockingham or Harrisonburg people at MRRJ and 314 at RHRJ. MRRJ’s broader count also included home electronic monitoring and state-responsible people waiting for VADOC transfer. Those figures are dated planning data. They are not current custody totals or release statistics.
The history matters because it explains the search pattern. A person associated with Rockingham County can be held outside Rockingham County at MRRJ. Conversely, the lack of a current Liberty Street booking says nothing about whether MRRJ holds the person. Both regional systems should be checked before moving to VADOC or concluding there was a community release.
A state-responsible person may remain physically in a regional jail while waiting for VADOC intake or placement. In that overlap, the jail record answers present location, the court supplies the sentence, and VADOC controls the state-authority and time-computation record. These sources can all refer to the same person without being duplicates. Their dates should be compared, not merged into a guessed release story.
Rockingham Record Custody Lines
Four offices can hold distinct parts of one MRRJ case. MRRJ holds its booking, custody, release, transfer, and intake-photo records. The committing clerk keeps case entries and final orders. RHRJ keeps a separate record if the person moved there. VADOC maintains state-custody or supervision material after state acceptance. Sending one broad request to the Sheriff can miss the MRRJ record entirely.
- Custodian
- The public body that made or keeps the requested record.
- Remand
- A court order placing or returning a person into custody.
- State responsible
- A person whose sentence places responsibility with VADOC, even during some regional-jail time.
- Discharge
- The end of a defined custody or supervision term, not necessarily the erasure of its record.
VINE can add a notice of a custody event. It does not replace the MRRJ record or court order. A release alert can also mean release from one jail’s control followed by a transfer. When exact timing or destination matters, request the source document and compare it with the receiving system.
Virginia’s record law does not require an agency to create a report it does not keep. It also permits redaction or withholding under applicable exemptions. Ask for segregable nonexempt parts, which means releasable portions separated from protected material, and request the current cost estimate before authorizing work.
When MRRJ records a community release, compare its timestamp and disposition with the court’s final order. A release on bond means the case can continue under court conditions. Time served or sentence satisfied means the active custodial term recorded in that order ended. Neither event automatically seals the case. Virginia’s sealing and expungement rules depend on the disposition and statutory eligibility, not on the simple fact that someone left MRRJ.
